Rangers’ Lindgren avoids discipline for hit on Avalanche’s Donskoi

New York Rangers defenceman Ryan Lindgren will not receive a suspension or fine for his hit on Colorado Avalanche forward Joonas Donskoi, the NHL Department of Player Safety announced on Wednesday.

The play occurred during the first period of Tuesday’s game between Colorado and New York, an eventual 5-3 win for the Rangers. Donskoi had his head down while carrying the puck through the neutral zone when Lindgren stepped up to lay the hit.

The NHL’s DPS noted that Lindgren made “significant head contact,” but that the Rangers defenceman “took a proper angle of approach” on Donskoi.

Avalanche centre Nazem Kadri clearly didn’t view it the same way.

Right after the hit, Kadri skated over to Lindgren and connected with several right-handed blows. Both players received fighting majors, while Kadri also received an instigation minor and a 10-minute misconduct penalty.

Donskoi left the game with an injury and the team has not yet provided an update on his status moving forward.
